Al Qaeda non nasce dalle bidonvilles. E’ una corrente di palazzo di uno dei paesi più aristocratici del mondo, l’Arabia Saudita. La popolazione vi è divisa fra una maggioranza di beduini, donne, operai immigrati, servi, schiavi e cammmelli e una minoranza di nobili miliardari che sono e possiedono tutto. La religione locale è una caricatura dell’islamismo, corrispondente al cattolicesimo dell’Inquisizione: le donne zitte, i froci a morte, i poveri in ginocchio e i ricchi in sella: se qualcuno protesta, prima forca e poi inferno. Questo regime, di gran lunga il più sanguinario e tirannico di tutto il Medio Oriente (Saddam in confronto era un povero boia), è “filoccidentale” fin dalla nascita, vale a dire da cent’anni. Il motivo è assai semplice: nella sua selvaggia barbarie, esso – per puro culo – è il proprietario del liquido che, nella tecnologia di fine ottocento, faceva muovere le macchine dei paesi ricchi. Siccome la tecnologia da allora è rimasta sostanzialmente ferma, quel liquido è rimasto importante e sono rimasti importanti i nobili sauditi.
Fra costoro, via via che fra una lapidazione e l’altra arrivava la civiltà (che tipo di civiltà? Invece di buttar giù da un dirupo i condannati, li scaraventavano da un aereo) si formarono due partiti. Il primo partito prevedeva di lapidare e ruttare tranquillamente per i prossimi cent’anni, coi soldi di americani e inglesi e decapitando fisicamente qualsiasi tentativo d’opposizione. Il secondo, di vendere il petrolio in proprio e a prezzi più alti, e di riuscire dunque così a lapidare molti più omosessuali e adultere e su un arco di terra molto più vasto.
I due partiti si combatterono fra loro con mezzi più o meno civili per qualche anno e finalmente uno dei due ebbe l’idea geniale di buttar tutto in politica, e anzi direttamente in religione. “Comandare con poteri assoluti” diventò “applicare la Legge Santa” e “prendiamoci tutti i soldi del petrolio” diventò “cacciamo gli infedeli”. Donne, lavoratori, schiavi e quant’altro continuarono a non aver diritto di parola: ebbero però dai nuovi nobili condottieri il privilegio di poterli applaudire entusiasticamente e all’occasione morire ai loro ordini in cambio di un posto in paradiso. Noi persone civili, in tutto questo, ci comportammo con un senso d’umanità e responsabilità veramente cristiano: dapprima appoggiammo i vecchi nobili e li aiutammo a lapidare donne e froci, in cambio del petrolio; poi appoggiammo i nuovi nobili e li aiutammo a sterminare i loro “infedeli”, in cambio del loro appoggio contro i nostri nemici.
In Afganistan, a un certo punto, venne su chissà come un governo “civile” (nel senso che permetteva alle donne di sollevare un pezzetto di velo ogni tanto), che però, per ragioni locali, era filo-russo. Noi arruolammo Bin Laden, lo mandammo contro i maledetti infedeli che volevano togliere il velo alle donne, lo facemmo vincere coi nostri soldi e le nostre armi, e lo mandammo al governo. Il nuovo governo prese il capo del governo quasi-civile, lo castrò, gli ficcò l’affare in bocca, lo portò in giro per Kabul per qualche ora, e infine misericordiosamente lo impiccò a un lampione. E poi si guardò attorno per vedere che altri lavori simili restavano da fare.
In Sicilia, il permesso dato ai mafiosi di ammazzare qualche comunista gli andò alla testa, li persuase che potevano andare oltre e ammazzare anche i giudici oltre che i sindacalisti. In Afganistan, il permesso di vincere contro i russi persuase Bin Laden che un giorno avrebbe potuto vincere anche su tutti gli altri.
Siccome l’Arabia Saudita è un paese ricchissimo (o meglio, lo sono le venti o trenta famiglie che la possiedono), così anche Al Qaeda, fin dall’origine, dispone di molti soldi, li investe in Europa e in America, li sa gestire; ha fatto dell’ottimo insider trading, due anni fa, subito prima e subito dopo l’undici settembre. E’ un’ottima multinazionale, che fra le altre cose produce anche (e non è l’unica) omicidi e bombe. Naturalmente, sarebbe facile distruggerla finanziariamente: basterebbe una semplice legge sulla trasparenza bancaria. Ma per motivi religiosi, noi occidentali non possiamo alzare un dito (come gli Indù sulle vacche sacre) sulle banche, nè possiamo assolutamente violare il velo di riservatezza che le circonda. Così abbiamo permesso di sopravvivere ad Al Qaeda, come a suo tempo avevamo permesso di sopravvivere a Cosa Nostra. Nell’illusione, naturalmente, di usarle “per ordine pubblico” e controllarle. Finché esse si accorgono di avere ormai accumulato un potere tale, da poterselo benissimo gestire per proprio conto.

Né Cosa Nostra è siciliana, né Al Qaeda è islamica. Sicilia e Islam sono la giustificazione ideologica, tratta da vecchi folklore ormai lontani del tempo. La base vera è a-ideologica: è potere, è denaro, è impresa di un gruppo di uomini che credono solamente in se stessi. Certo, si può aiutare Cosa Nostra impoverendo il popolo siciliano, così come si può aiutare Al Qaeda bombardando l’Iraq. Oppure si può combatterle portando la trasparenza in Sicilia e aiutando i popoli arabi – palestinesi in testa – a stare meglio.
Io ho visto molti proclami contro la mafia, e molti funerali di stato. Quanti discorsi e quante lacrime, e quante vittime dimenticate il giorno dopo; e quanta ipocrisia. Adesso, su scala mondiale, il meccanismo è lo stesso. A due anni dalle Due Torri, la lotta al terrorismo di Al Qaeda in realtà non è nemmeno cominciata. In mano alla peggior classe dirigente mai vista in America dai tempi di Coolidge, il terrorismo è invece diventato pretesto per “nuovi secoli americani”, pompaggio di politici mediocri, intrallazzi aziendali. Che importanza ha qualche marine portoricano o qualche straccione arabo in più o in meno, di fronte ai miliardi di dollari che si possono fare – mentre il resto dell’economia va in pezzi – speculando sulla bolla della “new patriotnomy”?
Imbrogli, appalti, affari di petrolio, invii di truppe, bombardamenti, invasioni, morti, vittime innocenti: tutto, tranne che azioni vere – nel cuore della finanza – contro le viscere del nemico, i soldi. I regimi da cui è sorta Al Qaeda – la monarchia saudita, la dittatura militare pakistana – sono sempre in piedi, “amici dell’Occidente”, ricchi, autorevoli, non insidiati da nessuno.
Senza Bin Laden, in fondo, non ci sarebbe Bush; senza Bush, Bin Laden non conterebbe. Bush e Bin Laden non come persone fisiche, come “tiranni” mediatici, ma come poteri reali, non di massa ma nemmeno solo individuali, che un anno dopo l’altro, un massacro dopo l’altro, complementari uno all’altro, si vanno impadronendo del pianeta. Di cui una parte almeno prima era democratica e adesso tortura e bombarda anche lei come se non ci fosse mai stato Illuminismo.
