Considerazioni su un nuovo libro di testimonianze su Peppino
A 45 anni dalla morte di Peppino è stato pubblicato un altro libro di testimonianze su Peppino Impastato, dopo quello dello scrivente, “Intorno a Peppino”, edito da Di Girolamo nel 2020. Il libro contiene una serie di ricordi e testimonianze interessanti, assieme alle affermazioni, probabilmente preordinate e concordate, attribuite ad alcune persone, con l’obiettivo, di “negare” alcuni ruoli e alcune presenze, soprattutto quella del sottoscritto, nella vita di Peppino e nel suo gruppo.
I negazionisti
Il primo è un certo Rosolino Puleo che parla delle lotte per la terza pista: “Salvo Vitale non c’era. Lui può dire quello che vuole, ma Salvo Vitale non c’era. Racconta i fatti del Mulinazzo per sentito dire”. E qualche pagina dopo: “Per quanto riguarda il signor Vitale, il fatto che lui si consideri erede culturale di Peppino Impastato, secondo me “pigghia na cantunera di pettu di chiddi grossi”, per dirla in siciliano. Ci furono diverse riunioni al Mulinazzo, in casa di alcuni contadini. Forse lui partecipò a una o due riunioni ma generalmente non c’era… con gente che non ha mai avuto contatti con chi ha bisogno, come il signor Vitale sono tutte cose, scusando la frase, di natura intellettuale. La tua faccia l’hai mai messa davanti ai puvireddi?”
Segue un certo Sarino Campisi: “Ricordo che all’inizio di Radio Aut eravamo quattro gatti e non c’era il professore Vitale che ha scritto tante cose, anche se non sa niente di quello che è successo prima. Mai visto nel gruppo di Peppino, I’ho visto qualche volta a Radio Aut prima dell’uccisione di Peppino. Poi, dopo I cento passi è venuto fuori questo personaggio, ha cominciato a mettersi in evidenza. Ma precedentemente no, mi dispiace”
Ancora: Pino Manzella, che ha curato il libro: “Sicuramente abbiamo sbagliato a lasciare per troppi anni, questa storia venisse raccontata in libri dove si mescolano fatti veri con invenzioni, a volte di cattivo gusto, come gli improbabili brindisi di mamma Felicia per la morte di ogni mafioso”.
Giovanni Riccobono non fa nomi, ma si può ipotizzare a chi si riferisce: “In questo contesto qualcuno ne ha approfittato riportando fatti raccontati dai compagni (ingenui) travolti da quell’immane tragedia. Li ha trascritti e ne ha fatto dei libri. Dentro questa storia così violenta e disumana questa è stata l’offesa più sporca che si potesse fare alla memoria di Peppi-no: un compagno assassinato, dilaniato dal tritolo e, allo stesso tempo, qualcuno che ne approfitta per diventare un “personaggio”.
Completa la serie “lo sfascista”, Andrea Bartolotta: “La rabbia è per quelli che dicono: “C’ero pure io” e invece non c’era. È successo tante volte. Forse non siamo stati capaci di dire: “Precisiamo una cosa, c’erano tanti ragazzi e tante ragazze a fare tante cose insieme e proprio tu caro Salvo Vitale, invece non c’eri. Perché?” … “Il riferimento a Salvo Vitale non è casuale o pretestuoso, è invece semplicemente inevitabile e indispensabile per fare chiarezza su quella impareggiabile esperienza collettiva vissuta a Cinisi tra il 1974 e il 1978… Peppino è il sole di questo giovane sistema solare, che non possiede due soli ma uno soltanto. Non ci siamo trovati all’interno di un sistema solare binario, per fortuna. Siamo stati davvero fortunati ad avere al centro soltanto Peppino e non Peppino e Salvo Vitale. Il prof. Vitale è arrivato alla fine, quando tutte le cose più importanti erano già state proposte e realizzate dal 1968 al 1978. Salvo Vitale arriva alla fine di novembre del 1977, per la prima volta compare dentro al gruppo, entra non da compagno ma come un corpo estraneo, nessuno tra i giovani di sinistra tra Cinisi e Terrasini lo conosceva, nessuno lo aveva avuto accanto in qualche iniziativa come compagno. Si è sempre giustificato raccontando frottole perché se è vero che dal ’70 al’74 ha insegnato in Sardegna, e che dal 1974 al 1977 ha insegnato a Lercara, è altrettanto vero che ha sempre trascorso ogni estate a Terrasini e, mentre lui trascorreva le sue vacanze da intellettuale piccolo borghese dalle nostre parti, non trovava mai il tempo di partecipare alle centinaia di iniziative che Musica e Cultura e Radio Aut organizzavano anche d’estate. È arrivato pochi mesi prima del 9 maggio 1978, ha partecipato con Peppino, Guido, Faro e Gianpiero alle ultime 4-5 trasmissioni di Onda Pazza e non ha fatto altro fino all’uccisione di Peppino. Le mille lotte insieme a Peppino in quali anni le avrà fatte allora il prof. Vitale? Quando le ha fatte se lui non è mai stato accanto a Peppino nemmeno nel 1968 durante la lotta contro la terza pista a Punta Raisi. Basterebbe leggere cinque articoli che lui ha scritto in quelle settimane come corrispondente del giornale L’Ora. Scrive e racconta le cose che i suoi zii e suo nonno, Cola Maltese, gli raccontavano quando poi a cose fatte si faceva vedere da quelle parti. Non c’era mai perché occupato in altre faccende. Era compagno di se stesso, cioè di nessuno. In diverse pubblicazioni il prof Vitale ha affermato, a distanza di parecchi anni dopo il film I cento passi, di aver provato in più di una occasione un certo rammarico per aver spinto Peppino a fare scelte sempre più radicali ed estreme, che inevitabilmente lo avrebbero esposto alla sanguinaria ferocia della mafia di Cinisi che in effetti dopo poco tempo userà il tritolo per dilaniare il corpo di Peppino. Come compagni di Peppino non abbiamo mai creduto a queste affermazioni ambigue e contraddittorie che tendono soltanto ad attribuirsi una forte influenza da parte sua sulle scelte politiche degli ultimi anni di lotta di Peppino. Peppino ha aiutato e stimolato parecchie persone a politicizzarsi per costruire un movimento giovanile di opposizione anticapitalista, antimafiosa e antifascista, ma non ha cercato di spingere verso radicalizzazioni eccessive che potessero mettere in pericolo la vita dei compagni. Peppino non ha avuto formatori lungo il percorso politico che ha compiuto dai sedici ai trent’anni. Non c’era stato il pittore Stefano Venuti prima, né tantomeno Salvo Vitale che ama troppo pavoneggiarsi e autocelebrarsi fregiandosi di titoli meriti e ruoli che non ha mai, nella realtà politica di Cinisi in quegli anni avuto o guadagnato sul campo.”
Perché adesso?
Sbollita l’amarezza riesco a spiegarmi perché otto compagni, quando due anni fa ho chiesto il permesso di pubblicare le loro testimonianze, mi hanno risposto: “Non ci sono le condizioni”. Si vede che queste condizioni le hanno trovate, e che le avevano già pronte allora, per il loro progetto. Dovrei anche ringraziarli se non mi hanno avvisato, come, per correttezza avevo fatto io, che nel loro libro c’era una mia testimonianza registrata qualche anno prima. Il titolo, “La memoria difficile”, richiama “L’antimafia difficile”, un libro curato da Umberto Santino con gli atti di un convegno che avevamo organizzato a Cinisi il 18 maggio 1988. Resta da capire il perché di tanto livore contro di me, in un lavoro che avrebbe dovuto essere un omaggio alla memoria di Peppino e perché certa gente se n’è stata zitta per quarantacinque anni e ha esternato i suoi ricordi negativi solo adesso. Perché sino a poco tempo fa tutto andava bene, tutti apprezzavano i miei scritti e perché dopo sono diventato un mostro, un visionario, un mentitore, un intellettuale piccolo borghese, un assente, uno sconosciuto, un millantatore, un mistificatore, un istigatore, un malato di protagonismo o addirittura un presunto assassino?
Una prima deduzione è semplice e non può non prescindere da chi ha curato il libro, cioè da Pino Manzella. Ho sempre avuto grande stima nei suoi confronti, ma si vede che la cosa non è corrisposta. Evidentemente si è convinto o si è lasciato convincere che era un’offesa alla memoria della sua compagna quella che io credevo un’eccezionale affermazione di femminismo e di padronanza del proprio essere, in un aneddoto riportato nel mio libro “Cento passi ancora.”(pag. 74) Qualche compagno ha acutamente definito certe prese di posizione, rispetto a quel libro, come un “moralismo di ritorno”, rispetto alla liberazione dai tabù vissuta e portata avanti ai tempi di Peppino da quelle stesse persone.
L’iniziativa
Trovo sul sito di Casa Memoria la registrazione dell’iniziativa, mi abbrutisco nell’ascolto e mi sembra un festival dell’ipocrisia, “un concentrato di individualismo da porcile e di “raffinata” ipocrisia filistea”, per dirla con Peppino. Ci sono anche Luisa e Felicetta, che intervengono, ma non c’è Giovanni, anche lui oggetto di alcuni schizzi di veleno e cattiverie. Presenta la moglie di Carlo B., non si sa a che titolo. Nel corso dell’incontro non si fa un minimo accenno alle porcate scritte su di me. Solo battute sottintese. Pino Dicevi, legge la testimonianza di Puleo, dalla quale omette a bella posta le parti che mi riguardano. Pino Manzella sostiene che è la prima volta che a parlare sono i compagni di Peppino, (sic!) e dice successivamente che il titolo di questo libro, “La memoria difficile” è perché c’è stata una “memoria deformata” e che il libro serve “per mettere le cose a posto”. Cita nel titolo la canzone di De André, ma sbaglia fiori, perché non sbocciavan “le rose”, ma “le viole”. In altra occasione ha detto che “La storia di Peppino viene qui depurata dal protagonismo autoreferenziale dei pavoni dell’antimafia”. Non si fanno nomi, ma si presume, con qualche dubbio, che questi “pavoni” non siano tra i 38 che hanno lasciato la loro testimonianza nel libro, tra cui io. Oppure sì. Questo è il leit motiv dell’incontro: di Peppino è stata fornita una falsa immagine e con questo libro se n’è ricostruita la vera identità. Si tratta delle registrazioni fatte in occasione della mostra di foto dei compagni di Peppino, dal titolo “Io non ritratto”. In realtà non si tratta solo di quelle, ma anche delle altre che, a suo tempo, non mi hanno voluto far pubblicare. Luisa cita i libri di Santino, senza un accenno ai miei, Carlo fa il suo schizzetto di veleno parlando di chi scrive, cioè di me “solo per accostare il proprio nome a quello di Peppino, e che ha fatto trendy (?), vabbè, lasciamo stare…”, lasciamo stare cosa? Peppino ti aveva dato il giusto soprannome, “Testone”. E poi che cavolate dici? “Nei vari libri spunta il fatto che noi compagni non l’abbiamo mai conosciuto”: stai confessando di non avere mai letto nessuno di questi “vari libri”, altrimenti sapresti che tutti i compagni hanno in essi un ruolo di primo piano.
Alla fine applausi e riconoscimenti, comunque meritati, a Umberto Santino e a sua moglie Anna, dopo che per anni molti dei presenti ne hanno parlato male, come di intrusi nella loro storia. Scaccio il pensiero maligno dell’ombra di don Tano che colpisce ancora, seminando zizzania tra chi Peppino l’ha amato sul serio e chi se n’è fatto una medaglietta da appendere al petto.

Rispondo, non per rivalsa, ma perché qualcuno potrebbe credere che il festival della menzogna sia verità. Il discorso non riguarda tutti, ma alcuni: ci sono ancora compagni stupendi e altri, ormai erosi dentro, dal ruolo di “veri” testimoni di Peppino, che si sono assunti. Il vero necessita di un falso cui contrapporsi e il falso se non c’è lo si crea, si aggiusta, si deforma, si identifica in qualcosa o qualcuno che diventa il soggetto da affidare al discredito, anche a costo di ricoprirlo di falsità. La tecnica è vecchia ed era molto diffusa, una volta nel corso delle purghe staliniane, poi tra i mafiosi, adesso tra i talebani e la polizia morale iraniana: attribuire falsamente, all’ipotetico individuo da punire o discreditare, una parola, una frase, un gesto, una presenza, insomma qualcosa ritenuta sbagliata, degna di riprovazione, per criticarla e condannarla, facendo credere di essere nel giusto. Succede sempre quando la fine di un rapporto è la fine di una chiave di lettura che trasforma in negatività tutto quello che una volta era sembrato splendido e bello.
Puleo Rosolino
Cominciamo col primo, tal Puleo Rosolino. Non lo ricordo. Telefono a Pino Vitale, autentica memoria storica e mi dice che negli anni ’60 era nel PCI con suo fratello Vincenzo, poi diventato dirigente a Città del Mare. Lo ricorda anche nella sezione FIOMM, al momento della violenta controffensiva mafiosa nei confronti degli edili, di cui Peppino si occupò a partire dal 1973. Un anno dopo egli emigrò in America. Chiedo se si trovasse a Punta Raisi al momento degli scontri e Pino mi dice di non potermi rispondere perché quel giorno egli era a lavorare. Neanche io sono in grado di dire se c’era. Io non l’ho visto, oppure non l’ho notato perché non lo conoscevo. Invece la sua affermazione è decisa: “Salvo Vitale non c’era” e quello che egli ha scritto, l’ha sentito dire. Che dire? Forse mi trovavo in un’altra manifestazione lì vicino!!! Il suo racconto presenta molte incongruenze, a cominciare da questa: “La polizia arrivò la mattina e dettò una lista di nomi dicendoci: “Ragazzi, voi qui non avete alcun interesse, vi preghiamo di andarvene”. Ma noi siamo rimasti, c’erano i fratelli Saverio e Angelo Sgro, c’era Peppino, Totò Maltese, Giacomino Abbate e altri del gruppo extraparlamentare. Salvo Vitale non c’era. Lui può dire quello che vuole, ma Salvo Vitale non c’era, racconta i fatti del Mulinazzo per sentito dire”. Ebbene, viene il sospetto che forse non c’era Rosolino: infatti non arrivò la polizia, ma i carabinieri, non avevano alcun elenco e la prima frase detta dal tenentino di Partinico fu: “Le solite facce…le lavandaie si stiano a casa” con tutto il resto che ho raccontato perché si è svolto sotto i miei occhi, non perché me l’hanno raccontato. Anche l’episodio dell’operaio comunista alla guida della motopala, che quando si trova i contadini seduti davanti al suo mezzo, spegne il motore e se ne va, rischiando il posto di lavoro, lascia il tempo che trova: a parte il fatto che le motopale erano due e che l’altra si fermò pure, a mezzo metro dai nostri piedi, è assolutamente certo che nessuno dei due palisti avrebbe messo a rischio la vita dei manifestanti, presumibilmente l’ordine era quello di farci spaventare, tant’è che dopo ci caricarono e le botte ancora mi bruciano. Quindi nessun atto di coraggio se non quello di coloro che si erano seduti davanti al suo mezzo, disposti a tutto. Tra essi u zzu Luigi Rizzo, che svenne per un colpo preso in testa e costrinse i picchiatori, preoccupati, a fermarsi. Ma di questo il signor Puleo non si ricorda, perché lì davanti c’eravamo Carlo Caruso, Rocco Munacò, Faro Gaglio, Vito u Persu, Peppino “Muccuneddu, Peppino Impastato, Giovanni, Giacomino e altri che potrei elencare senza problemi. Non so se c’era lui, se stava in mezzo ai contadini, e perché sta arrivando ora a contestarmi la precisa e dolorosa descrizione che ho pubblicato per la prima volta nel bollettino “Dieci anni di lotta contro la mafia” nel 1978. Secondo la logica di Puleo a me toglievano il terreno, ma non c’ero, a lui non toglievano niente, ma c’era. Mah! Tra parentesi, il gruppo della FGCI sceso a Punta Raisi non era di “una quarantina più dieci o 15 extraparlamentari” ma di una quindicina di persone in tutto. È vero che Franco Maniaci pagò caro l’aver detto “bastardo” al carabiniere che lo stava caricando, ma è anche vero che un altro esponente del PCI, il giorno dopo che andai con alcuni espropriandi dal Presidente della Regione on. Bonfiglio, il quale promise il 10% anticipato, disse all’ing. Mammì e ai carabinieri che erano con lui che il PCI e il Consorzio Espropriandi si erano accordati e che erano rimasti a protestare solo quattro studenti che giocavano a fare i rivoluzionari. In realtà erano rimasti a resistere, ma solo sino al giorno successivo, più della metà degli espropriandi, ma ormai il fronte era stato rotto, anche con la promessa di qualche posto di lavoro all’aeroporto. È da quel giorno che con il PCI ho chiuso. In precedenza avevo chiuso anche con il giornale “L’Ora”, quando mi dissero che non mi avrebbero pubblicato più articoli sull’argomento, perché l’aeroporto “si doveva fare”. A proposito, quel giorno vennero da Palermo anche alcuni del “circolo Lenin” guidati da Enrico Basilone. Queste cose se le ricorda il sig. Puleo? Lo sa che il volantino del gruppo marxista-leninista lo scrissi con la mia inconfondibile macchina, che aveva in formato maiuscolo anche i caratteri minuscoli? L’originale è a Casa Memoria, controllare per credere. L’accanimento di questa persona lo porta al punto di sostenere che io mi considero “erede culturale di Peppino Impastato” e che mi piglio, perciò, “na cantunera di pettu”. In realtà la “cantunera di pettu” la piglia lui nell’attribuirmi questa considerazione, perché io non mi considero erede culturale di nessuno se non di me stesso, senza negare il contributo che Peppino ha dato alla mia formazione politica. L’ultima affermazione è una vera carognata: io “non ho mai avuto contatti con chi ha bisogno e che non ho mai messo la faccia davanti ai puvireddi”. Che ne sai tu, stronzetto che non sei altro, della mia vita e dei miei contatti con i pescatori, con le donne di Terrasini che portavano avanti, assieme a Peppino, la “rivolta delle pignate” cui fai cenno, ma di cui non sai niente, dei miei rapporti con i contadini di Punta Raisi, con i figli dei pastori sardi, del mio lavoro con i disoccupati e i senzatetto di Partinico, delle mie lotte ambientaliste e di quelle contro i mafiosi non solo locali? Perché questa cattiveria? Forse che io mi sono permesso di giudicare la tua vita e le tue scelte?
Campisi Sarino
Andiamo al secondo, Sarino Campisi. Secondo lui “Il prof. Vitale ha scritto tante cose, ma non sa niente di quello che è successo prima”. Non so come posso avere scritto tante cose senza saperne niente. Non credo di averlo mai incontrato, oppure, se l’avrò visto non ne conoscevo il nome. Le sue affermazioni cominciano con alcuni errori: sostiene di avere conosciuto Peppino tramite un suo compagno di classe, in terza media, Giampiero La Fata, che lo avrebbe introdotto nel gruppo. Giampiero afferma nella sua dichiarazione di avere conosciuto Peppino nel 1969, a 15 anni. Bisognerebbe dedurre che anche lui, coetaneo di Giampiero, lo ha conosciuto in quell’anno, ma non due anni prima, in terza media, quando aveva solo 13 anni e mi pare difficile che a quell’età si interessasse di maoismo. Nel gruppo di quegli anni egli indica anche Vito Lo Duca, un muratore che conobbe Peppino solo nel 1974, quando egli si occupava degli edili. E tuttavia, davanti a questi vuoti di memoria, egli afferma con certezza che non sono mai stato visto nel gruppo di Peppino e che mi ha visto solo qualche volta a Radio Aut. Come al solito io credo che le nostre strade non si sono incontrate, ma non mi sognerei mai di dire che lui non c’era o che c’era solo qualche volta. È una questione di correttezza. O forse sotto c’è qualche altra cosa concordata. Quella del trasmettitore comprato a Livorno mi sembra la “minchiata” più grossa: il trasmettitore era quello di Radio Apache Palermo, basta chiedere a Danilo Sulis, che fece da intermediario e che ci ha scritto anche un libro.
Anche nei confronti di Giovanni racconta una verità diversa da quella che egli scrive nei suoi libri: “Sapevo che il fratello non muoveva foglia perché la mattina andava a lavorare con suo padre…la vita di Giovanni con la vita di Peppino non c’entrava niente. Giovanni era il figlio buono. Erano due cose distinte e separate. Prima della morte di Peppino Giovanni non c’entra niente, non gliene fregava niente, non sapeva niente di politica, gli interessava solo Felicetta”.
Bartolotta Andrea
E andiamo al terzo campione che mi riserva un trattamento speciale di un paio di pagine. È uno di quelli che, con il trascorrere del tempo e l’acuirsi di qualche problema psicologico, si ritengono unici veri e autentici compagni di Peppino e quindi i “crociati” della difesa della sua identità. Non mi soffermo sulle sue vicende personali, su cui non mi permetto di giudicare. La sua accusa ricorrente e pregiudiziale, è che io non c’ero, “tra tanti ragazzi e tante ragazze a fare tante cose insieme” e si chiede perché non c’ero. C’erano invece alcuni “sempre presenti”, a suo dire, sul pullman. Inevitabile chiedersi: come si fa ad essere sempre presenti, quando, a parte i figli, si hanno altre cose da fare, o se si vive e si lavora altrove? Ma questo non importa. Sempre e mai sono due categorie della menzogna. E, con la sfacciataggine del bugiardo, Andreuccio sostiene che “sono arrivato quando già tutte le cose più importanti erano state proposte e realizzate”: ma che cosa vuol dire, che avevamo vinto la lotta alla mafia o che c’era stata la rivoluzione?. Mah! A suo dire, arrivo alla radio non a settembre 1977, dopo il mio trasferimento a Partinico, ma a fine novembre (non capisco perché mi toglie due mesi, forse per sminuirmi due mesi d’impegno), “non da compagno, ma come un corpo estraneo, perché nessuno mi conosceva”. Cioè, io, tra i primi a far parte di questo gruppo, ero il signor nessuno, specialmente a Terrasini, sede della Radio, dove ho la casa e avevo trascorso buona parte della mia vita. Naturalmente “racconto frottole”, perché, anche quando sono stato otto anni fuori, trascorrevo le mie vacanze a Terrasini (nota: “dalle nostre parti”, come se non fossero anche mie), da intellettuale piccolo borghese e non trovavo il tempo di partecipare alle iniziative…”.
Andreuccio, siamo alle solite, tu non mi hai visto, perché eri assorto in altro, ma non puoi dire che non c’ero, perché ti assicuro di esserci stato, quando mi è stato possibile, di avere assistito a qualche rappresentazione teatrale del circolo OM al Malaseno di Partanna, come “L’eccezione e la regola” per le vacanze pasquali dell’aprile 1975 e alle rappresentazioni della “Compagnia del Sarto” di Gaspare Cucinella e Franco Scaldati a Cinisi, a Terrasini al cinema Vittoria e a Scopello. Ti risparmio il concerto di Venditti al Biondo, quando ci siamo imboscati alla Vucciria, e tante altre occasioni in cui come te, c’ero alcune volte e non c’ero in altre e comunque, non ero obbligato ad esserci o a farmi notare da te per dimostrare che ero un militante. Ti risparmio le nottate passate con Peppino e con Salvatore Lo Leggio alla facoltà di Lettere occupata. Tu dov’eri? A frequentare “lo Svizzero” e il suo gruppetto di camerati? E poi che cosa vuoi dire che io trascorrevo le vacanze da intellettuale piccolo borghese? Forse che tutti gli insegnanti che trascorrono il loro mese di vacanza, o tutti quelli che si godono le ferie sono piccolo borghesi? Che discorso è? Tu facevi forse le vacanze proletarie? Quando mai ho detto o scritto di avere fatto “mille lotte assieme a Peppino”? Solo qualcuna. Fortunatamente ci sono le registrazioni che testimoniano la mia partecipazione alla Radio prima e dopo la morte di Peppino. Lì non ti ho visto più, mi riferisco al dopo, ma non dico che non c’eri. E così con un’infantile rilettura dei fatti l’esistente diventa inesistente e l’inesistente assume se stesso a centro dell’esistenza. C’è un’altra chicca, ovvero quando scrivi che basterebbe leggere i miei articoli su L’Ora per vedere come le mie notizie non erano di prima mano, ma mi erano state raccontate da mio nonno o dai miei zii e che mi facevo vedere a cose fatte. Ehi, bello, ma sai leggere? Per i miei articoli cito solo un titolo: “Lasceranno solo con la forza i loro terreni i contadini di Punta Raisi”. (22.09.1968). Prima di parlare leggi, e non dirmi che leggevi L’Ora nel ‘68, quando del Mulinazzo e dell’aeroporto non te ne fregava niente. Per il resto, mio nonno Nicolò Maltese è morto il 30.9.1959, e non poteva essere perciò un mio informatore, a meno che non mi passasse le notizie dall’oltretomba, così come i miei zii, che in quel tempo erano emigrati tutti in America. Così passiamo dalle mie apparizioni dal nulla alle voci dall’aldilà! La domanda è: “Cos’hai fumato?”. Solo per tua informazione, il Cola Maltese che cito in un mio articolo tra i morti dopo l’esproprio non era mio nonno, ma un suo omonimo cugino che aveva il terreno alla Marina, presso “la Fontana di donna Grazia”. A pag. 28 c’è la fotografia della mia casa al Mulinazzo, con la scritta da me fatta sui gradini di una scala di legno, mentre Peppino teneva il barattolo con la vernice. Probabilmente chi ha pubblicato la foto o non sapeva che fosse la mia casa, o, se lo sapeva, voleva accreditare una mia immagine di potenziale assassino e terrorista, chissà? E su questa identità c’è l’ultima carognata: “Il prof. Vitale in diverse pubblicazioni… ha affermato di provare rammarico per avere spinto Peppino a fare scelte sempre più radicali ed estreme…”. La cattiveria arriva al punto di estrapolare una parte di un discorso, di stravolgerne il senso per farmi passare come un responsabile della morte di Peppino, o che, bontà sua, avrei cercato di influenzare le sue lotte politiche, o addirittura che avrei messo “in pericolo la vita dei compagni”. Manca poco a far di me un assassino. Cito la frase, presente non in molti libri, ma solo nell’introduzione alla seconda edizione del mio libro ”Nel cuore dei coralli” del 2002, affinchè chi legga si renda conto di come si possa carognescamente mistificare un dolore atroce: “ Di quegli otto mesi di intenso impegno conservo ancora qualche rimorso: ho tirato e fatto tirare la corda più di quanto Peppino avesse fatto sino allora, stimolando la sua naturale aggressività e lasciandogli sviscerare senza remore la sua grande conoscenza degli ambienti mafiosi e politici di Cinisi; ho cercato di elevare ad arte e a strumento di civile lotta politica la satira e ho finito con lo scordarmi che, quando la ridicolizzazione e la denuncia aperta intaccano interessi e credibilità, scattano sistemi di risposta e controffensive che, in una terra di barbarie e di violenza come quella in cui ci siamo mossi, prevedono anche la pena di morte”.
Un esempio, per Andrea che fa finta di non capire e di cui c’è la registrazione: nel corso di una trasmissione denunciamo un intrallazzo di don Tano, io gli dico “Bada… Bada…”, lui raccoglie la provocazione e spara: “Bada a come ti lamenti, porco cane!”. Sino a quel momento alla radio si era parlato di Don Tano, ma non se n’era pronunciato il cognome. Mea culpa. Quando si è dentro a drammi di questo tipo qualche senso di colpa nasce dal fatto di credere di non avere fatto tutto quello che poteva essere fatto, nel momento in cui la tua sensibilità s’incontra col tuo senso di responsabilità. Non so se questo Andrea lo sa, ma la sua cattiveria lo porta a perdersi sul sentiero delle minchiate senza botto. E comunque non basta ritagliare un viso da una foto per cancellarne la presenza. Certo che questo prof. che “compare” all’improvviso dal nulla è bellissimo, lascia immaginare un’apparizione miracolosa del male che s’intrufola nel tessuto sano di tutto il gruppo o di Cristo che si trasfigura davanti a Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni: sant’Andrea non c’era, però è riuscito a trasfigurare tutto quello che è passato sotto i suoi occhi. Sicuramente non c’era quando facevamo “Onda Pazza”, altrimenti non affermerebbe che vi partecipavano Guido e Giampiero, i quali, quella trasmissione l’ascoltavano solo dall’esterno. Sicuramente egli non c’era neanche la domenica mattina, quando portavo avanti da solo tre o quattro ore di trasmissione. Ma a me non serve attestare le sue assenze, lui invece, negando la mia presenza intenderebbe mettere in discussione tutto quello che scrivo.

Con Giovanni abbiamo portato avanti Radio Aut dalla morte di Peppino sino alla sua chiusura nell’estate del 1980. Ma non solo quello. A lui mi ha sempre legato un grande affetto e sarebbe stato opportuno che avesse indicato il nome di questo spregevole individuo che carpisce le memorie dei compagni ingenui e quella di Peppino per scrivere libri e diventare un “personaggio”. Che chiarisse che cosa vuol dire promuoversi a personaggio e se, alla fine, personaggio lo è diventato e che cosa ha fatto per diventarlo, oltre che allo scrivere libri. Sarebbe davvero triste e strano se, secondo lui, chi scrive un libro su una persona uccisa dalla mafia ci specula su per diventare personaggio. E poi, chi sono gli ingenui compagni che si sarebbero o ci saremmo fatti raggirare da questo essere malefico? Quelli che conosco io sono, o siamo tutt’altro che ingenui. Ho imparato, comunque, a non farmi illusioni, neanche da parte dei compagni più cari.

Non so se era meglio ignorare tutto, far finta che niente sia successo, lasciar perdere. Qualcuno potrebbe sostener che non giova a nessuno questo gettarsi fango addosso: in verità io mi sono lavato del fango che qualcuno mi ha buttato, ma non credo di avere infangato nessuno, è solo che non ci sto a tacere o a essere insultato. Non condivido l’obbligo di presenza del militante: non è importante apparire, farsi vedere, ma credere, non l’esserci, ma l’essere: il contrario di quanto pensa Andrea. Quando vado in giro a parlare di Peppino faccio quello che molti dei compagni, anche Andrea, fanno: testimonianza ed educazione antimafia: perché io mi dovrei pavoneggiare e gli altri, lui compreso, no?
Egli, con altri suoi sodali, sostiene che esiste un unico sole, Peppino, di cui gli altri sono stati pianeti, discepoli del “maestro”: per contro, io invece ritengo che ognuno di noi è un sole, non un pianeta, e che ha dato il suo contributo all’identità del gruppo di cui ha fatto parte, ma c’è chi mi potrebbe accusare, per questo, di sminuire la grandezza di Peppino. Vabbè!
I cani
Resta un’infinita tristezza su come sono degenerate le cose, su come si è voluta portare avanti un’operazione di discredito e di diffamazione, degna di ben altra causa, per sostenere che ero un corpo estraneo al gruppo del quale da sempre avevo fatto parte e che, se c’ero, era solo un flash. Se tale livello di scontro fosse stato alzato nei confronti della lotta alla mafia, anziché contro un compagno, a quest’ora avremmo migliorato di molto la nostra condizione di uomini liberi, potremmo incontrarci per strada con e tra “mille facce sorridenti”. L’ipocrisia è una brutta malattia: non riesco a togliermi dalla testa le parole di Peppino: “La gente peggiore l’ho conosciuta proprio tra i “personalisti” (cultori del personale) e i cosiddetti “creativi” (ri-creativi): un concentrato di individualismo da porcile e di “raffinata” ipocrisia filistea: a loro preferisco criminali incalliti, ladri stupratori, assassini e la “canaglia’ in genere. Debbo purtroppo riconoscere d’aver dato la mia sensibilità in pasto ai cani”. Lui aveva subito squadrato i suoi “polli”, anzi “cani”, io ci ho messo quasi mezzo secolo per capirlo. Quei “cani” ai quali egli dice di aver dato in pasto la sua sensibilità, non potevano essere altro che persone a lui vicine e che non hanno smesso di abbaiare, di fagocitare quello che altri hanno portato avanti, per coprire la loro incapacità di costruire qualcosa. E sa d’incompiuto anche la scritta nello striscione che ci portiamo dietro da quasi 50 anni “Con le idee e il coraggio di Peppino noi continuiamo”: diciamo pure che si è andati a rilento perché mancano le sue idee e il suo coraggio.
