La non-violenza è la risposta

Parlare della “non violenza” come scelta comportamentale dà sempre luogo ad equivoci e a polemiche, specialmente in un tempo come questo, in cui tutti gli sciacalletti da tastiera sentono il bisogno di esternare il proprio pensiero e di ritenerlo migliore nel confronto con quello degli altri, anche se gli altri sono grandi uomini che hanno lasciato un segno nella storia. La definizione di Oxford languages è lapidaria: “Rifiuto del ricorso a qualsiasi forma di violenza fisica, nella lotta per il riconoscimento di diritti civili o politici”: la definizione è riduttiva, in quanto la violenza considerata è quella fisica e finalizzata solo alla lotta per i diritti civili e politici
La guerra in Ucraina
La guerra in Ucraina ha fatto riemergere fantasmi del passato, macerie, morti, storie tragiche, paure, dolore, fame, stupri, odio, cattiveria, morte. La radicalizzazione del conflitto e l’autocoinvolgimento di stati estranei alle ragioni del contendere, ha portato schiere di esuberanti difensori della democrazia e dell’integrità territoriale, a ritenersi offese dell’azione avviata dal capoccia russo, a decidere le sanzioni, a inviare armi e soldi, a pompare un gigantesco sistema informativo di odio sino allo stupido ostracismo anche nei confronti dei capolavori dell’arte, della letteratura, della musica, della scienza. Si è generato coscientemente e scientificamente un meccanismo di odio per tutto quello che poteva provenire dallo stato aggressore, quasi un reciproco e arcaico bisogno di segnare la vecchia linea di demarcazione tra Oriente e Occidente, oppure un nuovo muro di Berlino. I fanatici delle dicotomie hanno deciso che non c’è spazio né per gli indecisi, né per chi si astiene dallo schierarsi, né per i non violenti: sono tutti amici di Putin, fanno il suo gioco, giustificano l’invasione ed altre stupidaggini che possono nascere solo da menti bacate.
Gandhi
In un mio recente post ho riprodotto questo messaggio di Gandhi: «La nonviolenza, a mio parere, deve essere interpretata non puramente come un’espressione negativa che indica la volontà di non nuocere ad alcuno, ma come un’espressione positiva di amore, della volontà di fare il bene anche di chi commette il male. Ciò non significa tuttavia aiutare chi commette il male a continuare le sue azioni immorali o tollerare queste ultime passivamente. Al contrario l’amore, espressione positiva della nonviolenza, richiede che si resista a colui che commette il male dissociandosi da lui; anche se questo può offenderlo o arrecargli danni fisici. Così, se mio figlio conduce una vita immorale, io non devo aiutarlo a perseverare nella sua condotta continuando a mantenerlo; al contrario il mio amore per lui richiede che io cessi di mantenerlo in qualsiasi modo, anche se questo potrebbe significare la sua morte. E lo stesso amore richiede che io lo riaccolga al mio seno quando si pente. Ma non posso costringere con la forza fisica mio figlio a diventare buono. Questa a mio parere è la morale della storia del Figliol Prodigo. La non-collaborazione non è qualcosa di passivo, è qualcosa di estremamente attivo, di più attivo della resistenza fisica e della violenza». (Gandhi)
In risposta, un mio amico su facebook, Baldassare C., ha commentato: “È tutto vero e giusto ed al limite contempla il martirio di fronte al male. Ma se stanno ammazzando, bombardando, dando fuoco alla tua casa, uccidendo e violentando i tuoi figli, tua moglie, i tuoi genitori il discorso cambia. Non tutti siamo dei santi e il confine tra santità e ignavia nella maggior parte dei casi è preciso. Nessuno può togliere il diritto alla legittima difesa in modo proporzionale alle offese”.
Si può facilmente vedere che l’amico non ha letto attentamente il messaggio gandhiano, ma nessuno si stupisca, perché questa è la risposta di molti non appena si parla di non violenza, quasi che si trattasse di una passiva accettazione dell’altrui violenza sulla propria pelle, senza un minimo di risposta. In molti casi si potrebbe parlare di vigliaccheria, di debolezza, di incapacità di autodifesa ecc., e invece proprio il messaggio di Gandhi è chiarissimo: “L’amore, espressione positiva della nonviolenza, richiede che si resista a colui che commette il male dissociandosi da lui: anche se questo può offenderlo o recargli danni fisici”. Anche il citato esempio del figliol prodigo che rifiuta di pentirsi e non può essere incoraggiato, anche a costo di determinarne la morte, è una chiara affermazione del valore etico della nonviolenza e dell’alto livello di responsabilità nella sua scelta.
Danilo Dolci
In un suo articolo sulla nonviolenza di Danilo Dolci, Giuseppe Barone scrive: “Non solo nelle chiacchiere da bar, ma anche negli scritti di autorevoli commentatori, sovente si confondono nonviolenza, pacifismo e resistenza passiva: un metodo di azione che implica sempre un fare, e soprattutto un fare in un certo modo, viene spacciato per pura e semplice astensione dalla violenza. I nonviolenti (o pacifisti, tanto fa lo stesso) vengono per lo più dipinti come anime belle, incapaci di vedere che il mondo si sostanzia di aggressioni conflitti uccisioni e così via; come persone convinte – ma senza che si presti credito eccessivo alla loro buona fede – che i problemi si risolvano mettendo fiori nelle canne dei fucili… Danilo Dolci, negli anni Cinquanta, definirà così il proprio lavoro per il riscatto delle popolazioni della Sicilia occidentale e contro il sistema clientelare-mafioso: «Continuazione della Resistenza, senza sparare… L’attivista nonviolento, come pure chi imbraccia un fucile per difendere la libertà di un popolo, muovono entrambi dall’esigenza, dall’urgenza, di modificare uno status quo ritenuto inaccettabile, ma perseguono il cambiamento con metodi antitetici. Non si tratta però di una scelta di comodo. «Un uomo», avverte Gandhi «non può praticare la nonviolenza ed essere nello stesso tempo un codardo. La pratica della nonviolenza richiede il più grande coraggio».
L’autodifesa
Facciamo più chiarezza riferendoci a una frase di Gandhi, citata spesso in modo parziale e quasi sempre a sproposito: «Piuttosto che scappare, meglio sparare», scrive il Mahatma. Ma subito dopo aggiunge: «Piuttosto che sparare, meglio cercare mezzi più efficaci e moralmente più accettabili».
In tal senso il diritto all’autodifesa appare sacrosanto, lo è meno quello dell’offesa, che ci rende simili a chi ci offende: un motto siciliano dice: “Pi un curnutu, un curnutu e menzu”, il che è qualcosa in più del render “pan per focaccia” e sicuramente qualcosa di molto meno del cristiano “porgi l’altra guancia”.
Chavez
Il sindacalista americano Cesar Chavez sosteneva che “Il primo principio di azione non violenta è quello della non cooperazione con tutto ciò che è umiliante.” Chavez si riferisce all’umiliazione della propria essenza di uomo, sia nei confronti di se stesso che degli altri: usare coercizione e brutalità nei confronti dei propri simili, spesso più deboli, mostra il livello di disprezzo con cui va riconosciuto il soggetto violento. In tal caso, al di là del metodo violento dell’aggressore, la non violenza apre una serie di possibilità che, alla lunga hanno buone probabilità di essere vincenti. Per fare un esempio banale si potrebbe pensare alla vittima di un’estorsione, che risponde pigliando a calci in culo il suo estorsore, con i conseguenti rischi, oppure meglio, che lo vada a denunciare per mandarlo in galera.
La violenza
Non esiste una risposta in cui tutti possano riconoscersi.
Gandhi è sempre il punto di riferimento: “Essendo la nonviolenza la più potente forza del mondo e anche la più sfuggente nel suo meccanismo, richiederà il massimo esercizio di fede. Proprio come crediamo in Dio per fede, così dovremmo credere per fede anche nella nonviolenza”.
E quindi andiamo oltre le spiegazioni razionali ed oltre le motivazioni logiche che possono giustificare l’uso della violenza: è un atto di fede. Aggiungerei che, prima di tutto è una scelta.
Dal dizionario Oxford Languages si possono trarre una serie di indicazioni:
- Forza impetuosa e incontrollata.
- Azione volontaria, esercitata da un soggetto su un altro, in modo da determinarlo ad agire contro la sua volontà. Con i suoi risvolti di violenza assoluta, violenza morale, violenza fisica, violenza carnale, violenza privata.
- Tendenza sorda e animalesca all’oppressione e alla sopraffazione.
- Ricorso all’uso della forza fisica e delle armi.
Le casistiche indicate sorvolano sull’uso della violenza come strumento politico usato dal potere nei confronti del cittadino, a partire dalla tortura, sulla violenza terroristica, su quella generata dalle fanatiche credenze in ideologie o religioni e su altre facce della violenza non necessariamente legate all’uso della forza fisica, ma a quello psicologico, dallo stalking all’intimidazione, alla soggezione, alla dipendenza.
Tolstoj
Nei confronti della guerra, in particolare di quella in corso, il giudizio si estende sulle violenze reciproche, quelle esercitate dai naziskin del Battaglione Azov nei confronti delle popolazioni russofone, a partire dal 2016 e quelle attribuite ai russi dopo la conquista di quelle terre. In pratica il principio che dovrebbe precedere ogni valutazione è quello che in qualsiasi conflitto tra gli uomini e donne la colpa non sta da una parte sola. Dopodichè, rispetto a tutti quelli che associano la croce con la spada, che sono poco convinti della poca efficacia, nella lettura della storia, di esperienze non violente e che ritengono normale e doveroso l’uso delle armi, si può controbattere, con Danilo Dolci: “A chi obietta che finora nella storia non sono stati possibili cambiamenti strutturali con metodi nonviolenti, che non sono esistite rivoluzioni nonviolente, occorre rispondere con nuove sperimentazioni per cui sia evidente che quanto ancora non è esistito in modo compiuto, può esistere. Occorre promuovere una nuova storia”. (Danilo Dolci: “Non sentite l’odore del fumo?, Laterza, Bari, 1971).
Anche l’accusa che la non violenza è una scelta di minoranze, rispetto alla violenza, che è ben più praticata, ha una sua risposta espressa da un grande russo, ben lontano dalla violenza ultimamente messa in atto dai suoi connazionali: “La domanda, che sembra così difficile, se non sia sbagliato, fra tanti viventi che praticano la violenza, essere l’unico o uno dei pochi non violenti, non è diversa dalla domanda se sia possibile essere sobri fra tanti ubriachi, e se non sia meglio darsi tutti quanti al bere.” (Lev Tolstoj).
Vecchie e nuove domande
La lunga premessa porta alle domande vecchie, ma nate in quest’ultimo anno come nuove: il soggetto che ha scelto la non violenza può approvare l’invio di armi alla Ucraina? La risposta è no. Deve condividere la risposta militare dell’Ucraina? La risposta è sì. Deve giustificare l’uso di armi di sterminio da parte di Zelensky ma è tenuto a condannare i Russi, se dovessero farlo loro? La risposta è no in entrambi i casi.
Il diritto all’autodeterminazione dei popoli va di pari passo con quello della difesa del proprio suolo, in caso d’invasione, e quindi non si mette in discussione la resistenza armata dell’Ucraina, ma la scelta della non violenza spinge alla ricerca di altri mezzi di boicottaggio, di dialogo, di alleanze, che non sono minimamente e volutamente state prese in considerazione. Il coinvolgimento internazionale degli stati europei, della Nato e degli USA ha dato al conflitto una dimensione ben più vasta dell’occupazione di una semplice porzione di territorio, con la scusa, neanche troppo occultata, di esibire i muscoli e dare una lezione a chi ha la pretesa di recitare la propria parte nella gestione dell’ordine mondiale. Ovviamente il giro di interessi, di scosse economiche planetarie, di manipolazione dei prezzi, a partire dalle materie prime, di produzione e commercio di armi e attrezzature belliche di vario tipo, sempre più sofisticate, l’esibizione di potenza, sono cose che vanno ben oltre la dolcezza cosmica di San Francesco, l’impegno civile di Danilo Dolci, la costanza e la voglia ostinata di libertà di Gandhi, il sogno d’amore di Luther King, lo spasmodico appello alla pace di papa Francesco, oltre il monito evangelico: “Rimetti la spada nel fodero, perché tutti quelli che mettono mano alla spada periranno di spada”. (Vangelo secondo Matteo: 26, 52), o ancora oltre l’Imagine di John Lennon: “Immagina che non ci siano patrie – Non è difficile farlo – Nulla per cui uccidere o morire – Ed anche alcuna religione – Immagina tutta la gente – Che vive la vita in pace”.
Margherita Hack
È vero che un altro mondo è possibile, che l’arcobaleno può abbracciare tutti sotto la sua emisfera, ma è anche vero che esistono autentici mascalzoni che creano le guerre per generare il bisogno di pace e poi usare tale bisogno per provocare altre guerre, il tutto per la soddisfazione di propri squallidi appetiti di potere e/o di ricchezza.
Tra i tanti messaggi valga quello nobile e purtroppo inascoltato, di Margherita Hack: “Cerchiamo di vivere in pace, qualunque sia la nostra origine, la nostra fede, il colore della nostra pelle, la nostra lingua e le nostre tradizioni. Impariamo a tollerare e ad apprezzare le differenze. Rigettiamo con forza ogni forma di violenza, di sopraffazione, la peggiore delle quali è la guerra”.
