Il figlio racconta: «Assieme nelle nottate alla tv per l’America’s Cup, non cenò mai fuori. Me lo ricordo zitto il giorno di Capaci. Le vittime? Preferisco il silenzio. Di mafia non parlo, e se lei mi domanda che cosa ne penso, io non rispondo»
«Tra febbraio e marzo del 1992 passammo notti intere insonni davanti al televisore a seguire il Moro di Venezia gareggiare nell’America’s Cup. Papà preparava la postazione del divano solo per noi due, con un vassoio di biscotti preparato per l’occasione e due sedie piazzate a mo’ di poggiapiedi… Io non avevo ancora compiuto 15 anni e lui, Totò Riina, era il mio eroe». Che, in quegli stessi giorni, pianificava e ordinava l’omicidio di Salvo Lima, il politico democristiano assassinato per non aver saputo «aggiustare» il maxiprocesso alla mafia.
«Il viso di Giovanni Falcone veniva riproposto ogni minuto»
Poco dopo venne il 23 maggio: «La tv era accesa su Rai1, e il telegiornale in edizione straordinaria già andava avanti da un’ora. Non facemmo domande, ma ci limitammo a guardare nello schermo. Il viso di Giovanni Falcone veniva riproposto ogni minuto, alternato alle immagini rivoltanti di un’autostrada aperta in due… Un cratere fumante, pieno di rottami e di poliziotti indaffarati nelle ricerche… Pure mio padre Totò era a casa. Stava seduto nella sua poltrona davanti al televisore. Anche lui in silenzio. Non diceva una parola, ma non era agitato o particolarmente incuriosito da quelle immagini. Sul volto qualche ruga, appena accigliato, ascoltava pensando ad altro». Era stato lui a decidere quella strage, per eliminare il magistrato che aveva portato alla sbarra Cosa nostra fino a infliggere l’ergastolo a Riina e compari.

E poi il 19 luglio, mentre la famiglia era in vacanza al mare: «Fu uno di quei giorni in cui mio padre preferì rimanere a casa ad aspettarci, sempre circondato dai suoi giornali che leggeva lentamente ma con attenzione. Negli ultimi mesi era diventato più attento nelle uscite in pubblico, anche se dentro casa era sempre il solito uomo sorridente e disposto al gioco». Al ritorno dalla spiaggia ancora la tv accesa, ancora immagini di morte, fuoco e fiamme: «Il magistrato Paolo Borsellino appariva in un riquadro a fianco, ripreso in una foto di poche settimane prima… Lucia, dodicenne, era la più colpita da quelle immagini. Si avvicinò a mio padre silenzioso. “Papà, dobbiamo ripartire?”. “Perché vuoi partire?” domandò lui, finalmente rompendo la tensione con la quale fissava il televisore. “Non lo so. Dobbiamo tornare a Palermo?”. “Voi pensate a godervi le vacanze. Restiamo al mare ancora per un po’”. Lucia scoppiò in una ingenua risata e lo abbracciò… E così restammo lì fino alla fine di agosto».
Le vittime di cui non parla
Anche l’eccidio di via D’Amelio era stato deciso da suo padre, Totò Riina. Ma questo particolare il figlio Giuseppe Salvatore detto Salvo, lo omette. Così come non parla di Lima, di Falcone e di tutte le altre vittime del capomafia corleonese che ha governato Cosa nostra a suon di omicidi. «Io non sono il magistrato di mio padre — dice sfilandosi gli occhiali da sole al tavolino di un bar di Padova, dove vive e lavora in libertà vigilata», divieto di lasciare la provincia e di uscire dalle 22 alle 6 —; non è competenza mia dire se è stato il capo della mafia oppure no. Lo stabiliscono le sentenze, io ho voluto parlare d’altro: la vita di una famiglia che è stata felice fino al giorno del suo arresto, raccontata come nessuno l’ha mai vista e conosciuta»

È nato così il libro Riina-Family Life scritto da Salvo Riina che a maggio compirà 39 anni, mafioso anche lui per la condanna a 8 anni e 10 mesi di pena interamente scontata, papà e fratello maggiore all’ergastolo (e al «41 bis»): «Giovanni lo può incontrare in prigione, seppure con le limitazioni del “carcere duro”, io no». E nel libro lamenta: «È dal gennaio del 1993 (quando Riina fu catturato, ndr). Che non faccio una carezza a mio padre, e così le mie sorelle e mia madre». Facile replicare che nemmeno i familiari dei morti di mafia possono più accarezzare i loro cari, e chiedere un pensiero per loro: le vittime. Salvo Riina risponde quasi di getto: «Non ne voglio parlare, perché qualunque cosa dicessi sarebbe strumentalizzata». Dipende, forse. Ma lui insiste: «Meglio il silenzio, nel rispetto del loro dolore e della loro sofferenza. Anche in questo caso la meglio parola è quella che non si dice». Un motto che rievoca l’omertà mafiosa, che però Riina jr contesta: «Non è omertà, è che io ho scritto il libro non per dare conto delle condanne subite da mio padre, anche perché sarebbe inutile. A me interessava far capire che esiste ed è esistita una famiglia che non aveva niente a che fare coi processi e quello che succedeva fuori, e che nessuno conosce anche se tutti pensano di poterla giudicare».
Un papà premuroso e amorevole
Ne viene fuori un’immagine di papà premuroso e amorevole che contrasta con la realtà giudiziaria e storica del boss protagonista delle più cruente trame criminali. «Non è quello che ho conosciuto io — ribatte convinto suo figlio —. Io sono orgoglioso di Totò Riina come uomo, non come capo della mafia. Io di mafia non parlo, se lei mi chiede che cosa ne penso non le rispondo. Io rispetto mio padre perché non mi ha fatto mai mancare niente, principalmente l’amore. Il resto l’hanno scritto i giudici, e io non me ne occupo». Quello che scrive Salvo Riina diventa così un racconto asciutto ma ricco di dettagli sulla vita fra le mura domestiche di una famiglia di latitante: Totò Riina e, di conseguenza, la moglie e i figli nati mentre lui era ricercato; continui cambi di case, ma sempre tra Palermo e dintorni; i bambini regolarmente registrati all’anagrafe ma impossibilitati ad andare a scuola, con la mamma che insegnava loro a leggere e scrivere; giochi e divertimenti garantiti ma niente amici in casa né visite a casa di amici; il papà che esce la mattina per andare a lavorare — «il geometra Bellomo», si faceva chiamare — e puntuale a cena si mette a tavola con la famiglia: «Mai saltata una sera», garantisce Salvo; l’attrazione per i motorini e le belle ragazze, i primi amori.
Infanzia e adolescenza felici
Infanzia e adolescenza felici, assicura il figlio del boss, trascorse senza fare domande: né sull’improbabile lavoro di un «terza elementare», né sulla necessità di non avere contatti con l’esterno o sul continuo girovagare, che col passare del tempo diventa consapevolezza di una vita in fuga. «A mio padre non ho mai chiesto perché dovessimo nasconderci, e nemmeno se era vero ciò che cominciai a sentire in tv o in giro, quando ho scoperto che ci chiamavano Riina, e non Bellomo». Strano, perché? «Per rispetto e pudore». Nei confronti di chi? «Di mio padre e mia madre: siamo cresciuti abituati a non chiedere». Si potrebbe chiamare cultura mafiosa. «Io invece lo chiamo rispetto, un’educazione a valori magari arcaici e tradizionali, che però a me piacciono; valori forti e sani».
Con l’arresto cambia tutto
Con l’arresto di Riina sr, il 15 gennaio 1993, cambiò tutto: l’arrivo a Corleone, l’esistenza non più clandestina ma sotto i riflettori del mondo e il microscopio di investigatori e giudici, che poi hanno arrestato e condannato i due figli maschi, Giovanni e lo stesso Salvo. Che adesso narra quel che vuole (anche il carcere e la pena scontata, evitando di entrare nel merito dei reati, fino al matrimonio della sorella accompagnata all’altare in sostituzione del papà, e altro ancora) ma tace su tanti particolari: dall’ultimo «covo» in cui abitò con suo padre ai commenti del capomafia intercettati in carcere, quando confessò la «fine del tonno» riservata a Falcone e altri delitti: «Non mi interessa soddisfare le curiosità altrui. Io difendo la dignità di un uomo e della sua famiglia. E la sua coerenza, quando ha rifiutato di collaborare con i magistrati. “Non ci si pente di fronte agli uomini, solo davanti a Dio”, mi ripeteva».
L’editore
Il risultato lo giudicheranno i lettori. L’editore, Mario Tricarico, chiarisce il senso di un’operazione che ritiene legittima e interessante: «È come se in casa del “Mostro” che ha governato l’impresa criminale forse più importante del mondo ci fosse stata una telecamera nascosta che ne registrava i momenti di normalità, e adesso chi vuole può vedere quel film». Scene di un interno mafioso che lasciano molte zone d’ombra, ma rivelano un punto di vista: il figlio del boss che non vuole parlare del boss bensì di un padre e di una madre «ai quali devo l’inizio della mia vita e l’uomo che sono», come ha scritto nel libro. Senza nessun imbarazzo? «No, nessun imbarazzo», risponde Salvo Riina rinforcando gli occhiali da sole.
