Dove fanno paura le elezioni
“Ok, boy, now you are democratic. A true citizen! Free elections, liberty for all!”.

“Ah, votari… See!”.
Così è nata la democrazia in Sicilia, per ordine degli americani. Nel luglio del ’43 noi uscivamo da vent’anni di fascismo, ottanta di Savoia, duecento di Borboni e duemila di dominazioni feudali varie. In tutto questo tempo non è che i siciliani non avessero mai cercato di dire la loro: scendevano in piazza, facevano barricate, incendiavano palazzi e quand’è arrivato Garibaldi hanno persino fatto le schioppettate. Elezioni no, nè qualcuno gliele concedeva. Tomasi di Lampedusa e De Roberto hanno descritto abbastanza bene come funzionavano le “elezioni” in Sicilia, e perché la gente non se ne fidava. Unica eccezione, quanto a partecipazione civile, il partito comunista: che però aveva a che fare con la lotta di classe e non con la “politica” ufficiale.
In Sicilia (come in Veneto, altro paese che non ha mai visto elezioni) il qualunquismo attuale ha quindi delle solide basi, neanche del tutto prive di motivazioni. Da ciò alcuni episodi, unici nei paesi occidentali, di inciviltà “elettorale”: dal candidato che in piazza proclama “Io sono amico del mafioso!” al governo che tranquillamente decide che per cominciare a contare i voti bisognerà aspettare almeno il giorno dopo.
La nostra democrazia, basata sulla paziente costruzione di un altro modo di pensare (dal doposcuola di quartiere all’inchiesta antimafia alla lotta per la casa) non è affatto popolare in Sicilia, non nella Sicilia “politica” e neanche in parte di quella popolare. Potremmo dire che andiamo avanti lo stesso per una questione di dignità, per non tradire chi ci ha lavorato. Invece siamo fermamente convinti che, andando avanti, alla fine arriveremo; che il nostro lavoro è realistico e concreto, e anzi è l’unico realismo e concretezza di questi tempi buffi, di illusioni virtuali e di concretissime complicità e prepotenze.
